Is God Dead?

A Christian apologist (defender of the faith…because apparently God isn’t able to defend himself), keeps asking the same question:  Is God Dead?

Of course, he offers many “proofs” (without evidence, which means they “prove” nothing) from Science (as he picks and chooses from scientific sources), Philosophy (which raises more questions) and Religion itself (to prove itself).

All I want to say to God’s Defender is this:

Is the Tooth Fairy dead?

Is Bigfoot dead?

Is Santa Claus dead? (St. Nick forbid!)

Is the Loch Ness Monster dead?

and, perhaps more to the issue:

Is Allah dead?

The Virgin Mary?

How about Krishna, Buddha or the Great Goddess?

Are Zeus, Apollo, Artemis, Heracles dead?

The expected response to these questions would “no doubt” show the nonsensical nature of the original question with the “proofs” presented.

The rational answer is “No, God is not dead.  Something cannot die if it never existed.”

Amen?

  1. Good evening Chris from Vancouver. It’s late at night and you are my last bit of writing before I retire…to my bed.

My thoughts are …I think god requires some definition that is agreeable if one wants to answer that question. For example, I read a book about Was Jesus a Humanist?. I think you know the author. For a few days, this Son of God as he sort of claimed but his followers had no doubt and gave him so that title lived in my mind as I read about his life and words from that perspective. But since the word humanist didn’t exist until centuries later, he did embody some important humanistic values that have merit such a supporting the marginalized, remaining doubtful of religious leadership in his era, and displaying on many occasions compassion for the sick, poor, and rejected by society.

IMHO god is a name that has been used so many times to express all of the projected desires of humanity for millennia that he has lived, in the consciousness of billions of people and that mental category has not and will not die so to speak unless replaced by the AI Divinity on the horizon. I know my definition of god is a thought category but many of my thoughts live with robustness and trust and I hope they do not become extinguished. But the skeptic will say…but what will happen to your thoughts when you die? My personal response to this is like yours. I write and tell stories to others so they will live as long as relevant to those who have read and heard and possibly passed down and repeated for a long time….but probably not forever. HA!

Time for a snooze….and if this is not real sensible you will know why Chris. .

    • Perceptive response, Marty. Definitions are certainly critically important with such lofty subjects. It’s good to respond (now and then) to these self-appointed “apologists” who use the term “god” freely, as if they’ve met the guy and demand we all believe as they do.

I’m impressed with your website, and expectantly await your book!

All the best, in the active and restful times,

      Chris
