I lived for three years on an island in the Pacific Northwest. A memorable experience in the land of my birth, writing and clearing trails through thick forests.
Islands here in the East are wildly different. We leave the mountains for the coast several times each year. The heat of the sun, the air and the water is new to me, while the wildlife is endlessly interesting.
On one Sunday morning bike ride we saw five alligators, a pair of nesting bald eagles, ospreys fishing near the beach, a huge heron and more. That evening, we took a boat ride across the sound and up a river where we were surrounded by playful dolphins.
No camera can capture these amazing moments in Nature, but here are a few images:

These pictures are. my church and where I go to sooth my soul and enjoy the wonders of our surroundings.
Good morning Chris from the Northwest, Canadian version. I had my sample of your world in 1980 when I worked for a hospital in Portsmouth Virginia starting a pain clinic in 1980. I travelled regularly from Virginia Beach to North Carolina for monthly seminars and patient visits at Duke University in Durham. The drive there was through swamp and forest with small black communities where if I stopped I was the only white dude within miles. They would serve me politely but look to see if I was an undercover policeman or Federal agent. Not many dudes of my ethnicity stopped for chow there.
Up here we have all of those fowl friends you mention particularly eagles and other fish seeking birds, lots of dolphins who seim next to our ferries entertaining us by an occasional glance and dive. No alligators however, which is okay with me particularly when playing golf in the wilderness. Nature to us both is our spiritual awe moments and everywhere a hike, fly fishing trip, or bike ride opens up to us on a regular basis. I think it is our church feast with all the trimmings. Ecstasy here and now. Don’t need to wait for another life to see the transcendent here on earth.
