For ten days in June, the Rogue took us over 1800 miles through North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey (at least sections of each). Many new scenes for me including Amish country (Bird in Hand, Intercourse!), the Cumberland Valley, Camden and the Allegheny mountains.
Every state has its unique beauty, customs, history. I was particularly impressed by the extraordinary beauty of West Virginia, especially around Pipestem, Blackwater Falls, Spruce Knob and Berkeley Springs. Great peaks and parks, streams and gorges, forests and fields. Memorable state.
We could see why John Denver sang of West Virginia as “almost heaven” (except for Coal Country–what a mess).
