My brother and I hiked a (small) section of the AT on Roan Mountain straddling the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. Mile after mile and never saw a sole but our own shoes. Rain, ice, green tunnels through the quiet forest … and no other human beings. True natural secular sanctuary.
