Course Description

Humanism is not a religion, yet offers a philosophy of life both rational and practical.  Humanism has been defined as “an ethical and life-affirming philosophy … a worldview which says that reason and science are the best ways to understand the world.” This expansive outlook encourages both greater thinking and generous action, with a commitment to compassion and justice.  Through lectures and discussions we will consider the value of a humanistic lifestance.

All readings will be provided by the instructor.

Week Two:  Historical hints of Humanism (past and present)

Week Three:  Humanist views of Religion and God

Week Four:  Humanism as a rational philosophy

Week Five :  Humanism as a practice of community
