Religion’s Gender Problem

This week’s column considers a very disturbing side to religious history:  Where are the Women?

Here’s a short preview. . .

Facts in the History of Faith:

  • None of the Highest Gods (of the Major Religions) have been female (there are female partners of male gods in Hinduism, but they are not the Highest deities)
  • None of the Great Religions of the World were founded by women
  • No major denominations have been founded by women
  • No scriptures (that we know of) were written by women
  • No Major Religion has been led by women
  • Women were not allowed to be in the highest levels of leadership for most of religious history
  • No theological seminaries have been founded or led by women (or included women professors) until recent years
  • No creeds, confessions or major theologies were written by women
  • No women have been “granted” status as clergy until recent times, in some traditions

Clearly, Religion has a gender problem.
