Sensible Sermon on Christian Nationalism

A very impressive message on this growing danger to democracy, and the threat to religious freedom (from a progressive Christian perspective).

This is a very good example of an elected leader (in this case, a state rep. in TX), who understands separation of church and state.  Even with the irony of a representative giving a sermon in his church! (but a good balance to the nonsense of the Cult of Trump).

  1. the problem with this sermon is the inaccuracies. He shouldn’t dare call a Supreme Court judge a Christian nationalist. How can he unequivocally say that one or several of the Supreme Court judges are Christian nationalists? in fact, define that term so I can identify these people. Too much of a generalization. I am a pro abortion conservative. I am tired of being called maga because I am a Republican.. we are generalizing too much and his words are divisive.

    • Thanks for your comment. I agree, people need to keep in mind that all Republicans are not in the “MAGA Cult” (as I would call it).

Christian Nationalism is, among other things, an ideology that seeks to give Religion, specifically an extremist form of Christianity, special privilege, preference and power in the public square, including in legal decisions. Mr. Talerico is correct, that a majority of the Supreme Court, in a number of recent decisions, is showing a preference for Christianity (Missouri, Montana, Maine, Dobbs, etc), privileging Religion over our secular Constitution in a pluralistic society. You might note what is happening in Oklahoma where taxpayers may soon be paying for a Catholic charter school.

I would refer you to Katherine Stewart’s book, The Power Worshippers, Gorski and Perry’s, The Flag and the Cross, and Andrew Seidel’s American Crusade, specifically about recent Supreme Court decisions.

I also agree, it isn’t helpful to generalize too much or use divisive words, unless the terms are accurate.

  2. There’s hope for Texas…and maybe the rest of us!

  3. Wow!!!!!!

This is the best counter to “Christian Nationalism” I have seen/heard!!! I love that he brings in Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and his grandfather’s wisdom that long Sunday morning walks are the best place to see G-O-D – the “Great Out Doors.”

In Texas, no less!! Maybe there is hope for us after all!

Thank you so much for alerting us, Chris!!!!!!!

(PS I’m wishing for a transcript, but so far can only find the one that accompanies the video as it progresses)

    Thanks again!!!!!!!

    • Yes, Elizabeth, Talerico has been a leading voice of reason in TX, even “schooling” a legislator who filed a bill to put the 10 Commands in schools. We need more leaders with his sense and education.

  4. I Think Christian nationalism Is Marxism
