An honest question has been migrating around my mind. I’m not joking when I ask it, and I’m not sure that it’s primarily a political question:
Why are Trumpublicans* aggressively working to keep millions of Christians out of America?
It’s a serious question. Consider the facts:
According to PEW Research, even ten years ago,
“Christians are expected to remain the largest religious group in Latin America and the Caribbean in the decades ahead, growing by 25% from 531 million in 2010 to 666 million in 2050.”
And this:
“Millions of migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean are projected to move out of the region in the decades ahead, and many are expected to move to the United States.”
So, it must be admitted that a large part of our “Border Crisis,” with the demand to “Build the Wall” against the so-called “dangerous caravans of criminals,” and make it much harder for asylum seekers, workers and others to enter the country, actually serves to keep vast numbers of Christians out.
Is it because they’re brown-skinned, non-English speaking Christians?
Is it because they’re predominantly Catholic Christians?
Is it because they’re Pentecostal Christians?
“Tens of millions of Latin Americans have left the Roman Catholic Church in recent decades and embraced Pentecostal Christianity, according to a new Pew Research Center survey on religion in 18 Latin American countries and Puerto Rico. Indeed, nearly one-in-five Latin Americans now describe themselves as Protestant, and across the countries surveyed majorities of them self-identify as Pentecostal or belong to a Pentecostal denomination.”
Given these facts, doesn’t it seem reasonable to ask Trumpublicans* why they are working so hard to
Keep Christians Out of the United States?
This question puts a human face on the politicized “Border Crisis,” and I suggest we repeatedly pose the question to the “Wall Builders” spreading fear and hatred.
One more thought, for the modern Pharaohs and Pharisees:
In the Story of the Exodus, God through Moses says to Pharaoh: “Let My People Go (Out).”
Are we seeing a New Exodus today, when a Voice might be saying: “Let My People Come (In)”?
(*”Trumpublicans” seems the most accurate description of the Republican Party in our day)
