Sabbath & Weary Gods

This weekend’s column stirred up at least one response, from a reader who generally likes my views, but not so much on this:

Can There Be No Rest for a Weary God?

The reader thinks I don’t really understand the purpose or meaning of Sabbath (though I was a minister and chaplain for a long time).

I’m all for taking breaks, resting from our work, but I’m a bit puzzled, not by the IDEA of “Sabbath,” but the PRACTICE.

How much “religious work” is done on “The Lord’s Day”?

See what you think.

  1. I find this concept very interesting. Can there ever be a true “sabbath”? Doesn’t there always have to be someone “working” even to just meets the needs of those resting or taking a day off. I’ve found interesting recently the fact that people get so up in arms about stores that stay open on Thanksgiving. ”Walmart employees deserve the day off”, these people shout from their podiums. But what about our public service police officers, firefighters, utilities employees, and hospital workers. Holiday observance don’t work for these people and they still have to work.

To my mind it’s another way that religion loses touch with reality. Another failed theory. There has to be someone working in an organized society to keep things going. . Not everyone can observe a sabbath at the same time. The same way that more people praying to God for one outcome is nothing more than a popularity contest of the most votes win.
